Educational Molecular Visualization EMail List

Maintained by Eric Martz and Rashie Athukorala

Purpose & Organization

This EdMolVis Email List was founded in July, 1997, for participants in the
NSF Workshops on Molecular Visualization in Biological Science Teaching, and mentorees of participants. Funding for these workshops came from NSF's Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement Program. Participants are faculty from 2- and 4-year colleges in the northeastern USA. Others interested in EdMolVis are welcome to subscribe, including high school teachers. Traffic on the EdMolVis list is very light.

Subscribers to the EdMolVis List should also be aware of the RasMol Email List, which was founded in November, 1995, 1.7 years earlier. As of January 1998, the RasMol List has 330 subscribers, slightly more than half of whom are from 30-some countries other than the US. Traffic on the RasMol list averages 1 messages/day. Recent topics discussed on the RasMol Email List can be viewed in the current history file of the RasMol Email List History.

To subscribe to the EdMolVis EMail List, send an email message to this address:

The body of the message must contain this one line:

subscribe edmolvis Your Name, Occupation, Location

for example

subscribe edmolvis Eric Martz, Prof, Dept Microbiol, U Mass, Amherst MA US

Please include a few words indicating your occupation, department, institution and location, as in the example line above. Abbreviate mercilessly and omit periods to keep the line shorter than 80 characters. (The subject line of the message is ignored by the automatic processor. Your email address is obtained automatically and does not need to be typed in.)

Weekly Digests

Those who wish can have all messages for each week delivered concatenated into a single 'digest' message. If you prefer to receive the digest, send to this message:

set edmolvis mail digest

To restore delivery to the per-message basis:

set edmolvis mail ack

('ack' stands for 'acknowledge' which means that when you send a message to the list, you will receive your own message back as confirmation that the message was broadcast. Don't ask why this is the inverse of digest -- it doesn't make any sense to me either, but it works.)

To unsubscribe, send to the above address:

unsubscribe edmolvis

Broadcasting messages

To send a message to all subscribers, address it to

Do not send 'subscribe' or other commands to this address as they will be sent to all subscribers but otherwise be ignored by the automatic processor.

History by Web

We are working on getting the history of this list onto the web but it is not yet available via web. See below for how you can get the history at this time. When the history becomes available by web, we'll announce it to the list.

History by EMail

You can get a history file by email, but you need to know its name. To find out the names of the history files, send to the message index edmolvis -all.

One of the files in the reply might be 97.07 (for July, 1997). To GET this history file, send to the message get edmolvis 97.07.

To SEARCH for history files containing a word or phrase, send to the message search edmolvis <word or phrase>, for example search edmolvis glycolysis.

Additional information

The edmolvis list is managed by a program called listproc. To get more detailed and technical information about its capabilities, send to the message help.
