Window Size Control in Protein Explorer (PE)

Rationale: Resizing the window containing a PE session generally causes the session to crash, or to start operating incorrectly. This is why it is important that the window be correctly sized before PE starts. (This resizing problem is between Chime and the browser, and is beyond our control.)

PE operates best in a window of at least 1024 x 768 pixels. It will operate in smaller windows, but the control layout will be less convenient, and you'll have to scroll more.

PE offers three methods for controlling the window size for new PE sessions. Select your preferred method from the menu labeled Window size for new PE sessions on the FrontDoor.

The method you select on the FrontDoor will be used in all future PE sessions, including those started from hyperlinks without using the FrontDoor. Your menu selection is saved as a cookie.

  1. Full Screen: PE will use this method by default. New PE sessions will fill your entire screen. This is optimal if your screen is 1024 x 768 pixels or less. If your screen is larger than 1024 x 768 pixels, full-screen PE sessions are still recommended, but you may use one of the options below to set smaller windows for PE if you prefer.

  2. Custom Size: The anticipated use for this method is when your screen is larger than 1024 x 768 pixels, and when you prefer not to use the full screen for PE sessions. You can set your custom PE window size as a percentage of your full screen, and then all PE sessions will automatically be that size.

  3. Manual Adjust: This method allows you to adjust manually the size of the window for each new PE session, before the session starts. As you adjust the window size, it reports its size and warns you if the size is deemed suboptimal, but you can choose to use suboptimal sizes if you wish.

If your Windows screen resolution will be less than 1024 x 768 (or 800 x 600 for Macs) we recommend increasing your screen resolution. Here's how. If you can't or don't want to increase your screen resolution, we recommend reducing the browser's default font sizes to enable PE to fit better in the smaller window. Here's how.

Width of Molecular Image

Regardless of how you configure window size for PE, you may find it useful to specify the percentage of PE's window allocated to the molecular image frame. For more information, click the link Set custom molecular image width on PE's FrontDoor (just below the Window Size link).
