Viewing MolSlides: Recommended Browsers
for MolSlides.ProteinExplorer.Org
This document recommends browsers for viewing MolSlides.
The browsers recommended for developing MolSlides are
fewer.
Windows:
The following browsers are excellent for viewing MolSlides exported to
either Chime or Jmol.
Jmol will work best if you upgrade to the latest java:
go to java.com.
- Firefox 1 or later (free, getfirefox.com)
- Netscape 7 or later (free, netscape.com)
- Mozilla 1 or later (free, mozilla.org)
- Internet Explorer (current version).
- Opera 8 is OK but backspace goes to the previous document,
so use PgUp or arrow keys to go to the previous slide.
For Chime, but not Jmol:
Macintosh OSX:
For MolSlides exported to Chime:
For MolSlides exported to Jmol:
- Safari (current version)
works perfectly, in part because Apple Updates include java updates for Safari.
- Poor to Unacceptable:
Firefox 1, Netscape 7 or later, Mozilla 1 (see sources above
under Windows), Opera, Camino.
Some of these may work acceptably
if their
java is updated.
Typical problems with these browsers:
- Jmol menu opens down, outside the window, where you can't access it.
This precludes toggling spin on/off.
- When advancing slides with Next/Previous links, sometimes
displays incorrect text (from a different slide) next to the molecular view.
- When there are multiple molecular views in a panel of MolSlides,
some views never display.
- Some keystroke controls (spacebar/Enter, del, etc. for
next/previous/top slide etc.) fail to work at the outset.
- After clicking in Jmol to rotate the molecule, you cannot restore
keystroke controls by clicking on text. You must reload the document
to restore keystroke controls.
linux, unix, etc.:
For MolSlides exported to Jmol:
- Mozilla 1.7.3
works perfectly on
RedHat linux version 9 with
java 1.4.2_08, according to Chris Pudney. (The jmol menu may open
down out of range sometimes.) It also works on
Knoppix.
- Konqueror does not display Jmol MolSlides correctly on Knoppix.
We are not set up to test linux/unix. Contact us (emartz@microbio.umass.edu)
if you are willing to make careful notes on a list of tests, and be quoted
on your results.
