Getting Started With Protein Explorer

Using the Protein Explorer Demo movies via a dial-up connection to the Internet

Over a regular (non-DSL) telephone line, some of the Demo movies will download very slowly. The window that opens for the movie will remain blank for 30 seconds or even longer, appearing to be totally inactive. When the movie does appear, it may stop frequently and appear unresponsive at some points the first time it plays.

In the near future, the demo movies will be available for download and offline use. In the meantime, here are some suggestions for optimal use of the movies when using a dial-up connection:

1. Problems with Playback:

  • Once you've clicked a link for a movie and it appears on the monitor (may take several minutes!), pause the movie using the control strip which will appear at the bottom of the movie. It may take a moment for the movie to stop fully. Once the movie stops, allow five or ten minutes to elapse before viewing.

  • (Then click the Play button on the control strip to start the movie)
  • Once a demo movie has been played through to the end, it will replay smoothly. Click the Rewind button on the movie's control strip to return to the start of the movie.

2. Problems with interactivity:

  • You will be asked to click on objects and links at several points in some of the demo movies. If a link does not respond, it may be due to a slow download of the ensuing frames of the movie. Please wait a few minutes and click again. If you have already waited a few minutes, re-enter the frame of the movie by using the control strip Back button to go back a single frame and then click the Play button to start the movie again.

  • Once a demo movie has been played through to the end, it will replay smoothly. Click the Rewind button on the movie's control strip to return to the start of the movie.
