Nanosensensors, Nanosensor Networks, Smart Sensors, Nanosensor Packaging

Professor Gao's research interests include embedded sensing methodologies, sensor designs, sensor networks, "smart" electromechanical systems, system miniaturization and integration, and multi-domain signal processing for machine condition monitoring, health diagnosis, and prognosis. Prof. Gao studies the interface and interaction of various engineering components (e.g. mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical), as well as their synergistic integration to enable "smart" sensors that can be structurally integrated into the object to be monitored for high signal-to-noise sensing. His research involves both analytical and numerical studies and experimental verification, leading to new sensor prototypes. His interest in nano and biotechnologies is mainly directed towards exploring new sensing mechanisms based on nanocomposite materials and arrays to enable better understanding of mechanical, biological, and other complex systems.

Research Interest Potential Application
Nanosensor design, modeling, and simulation New sensors for on-line, real-time equipment and process monitoring
Nanosensor networks Large, complex system monitoring and control, based on a large number of nano sensors
