Internship Seminar
Eve Weinbaum
This is a graduate seminar focused on research and writing. The goal
of the seminar is for each student to produce a major research paper of
publishable quality. The paper will be based on students' internship
experiences working with labor-related organizations, drawing on
theoretical and background materials from coursework and other
research.
The course is structured to provide each student with an opportunity to
prepare both a presentation and an advanced paper on some aspect of the
internship. The first step in this process will be to prepare a draft
paper to share with the class. The rough draft will be circulated and
discussed in class, with one student serving as primary discussant on
each paper. Based on feedback from colleagues and from the instructor,
the student will then revise the paper and submit a final draft. In
addition to presentations and discussions of research projects, we will
spend time discussing assigned readings and the writing process.
This course is required of all students who have completed internships.
Upon completion of the final project, students will be granted six
credits for the internship.
Each student will have four primary responsibilities:
1) To think critically about the internship experience and to prepare an in-class presentation on the project.
2) To read supplementary assignments and participate in seminar discussions.
3) To write a research paper of publishable quality, in a minimum of
three stages: an outline/bibliography, a first draft, and a final
paper.
4) To read and offer constructive feedback on other students' projects,
and to serve as primary discussant on one other project.
