Baritone Andrew Garland to lead masterclass

Baritone Andrew Garland will return to campus to conduct a masterclass with performances by students in the Department of Music and Dance on Friday, Dec. 4 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Bezanson Recital Hall.

According to voice professor William Hite, “The voice area of the Music and Dance Department is particularly proud to have Andrew share his experience and artistry with our students. Since his graduation from UMass he has proven himself to have the vocal, artistic and creative gifts that it takes to launch a successful career.”

Garland who graduated in 2000, has performed at the Kennedy Center and twice at Carnegie Hall. He studied with professor emerita Paulina Stark, received an M.M. and an artist’s diploma in Opera from the Cincinnati College’s Conservatory of Music. He won third prize in the 2009 Montreal International Music Competition and was the winner of the Washington International Music, American Traditions and the National Association of Teachers of Singing New England competitions.

Garland will perform at the Boston Lyric Opera as Dancairo in “Carmen.” He has performed as a soloist with the Atlanta, Delaware, Tucson and Utah Symphony Orchestras.

The event is sponsored by the Paulina Stark Vocal Program Enhancement Fund and is free and open to the public.
