Annual Metawampe Hike set for Nov. 1

This year’s Metawampe Hike in the Mount Toby range is being held Sunday, Nov. 1, beginning at noon.

With the earlier date organizers are hoping for better weather and more participants. The traditional hike begins from the east side of Mount Toby and is a four-mile, moderately paced trip. A two-mile, more leisurely hike begins in the southern end of the Mount Toby range.

All hikers should arrive at the Sunderland Congregational Church parking lot at the intersection of routes 116 and 47 no later than 11:45 a.m. Hikers will then ride to the appropriate trailhead in as few cars as possible to start hiking at noon.

At 5 p.m., hikers head back to the church for its now famous homemade chicken pot pie “all you can eat” dinner that includes vegetables, rolls, cole slaw, apple crisp and ice cream dessert, juice and coffee. Tickets to the dinner are $11 each; $4 for children 3-12; under 3 free. Tickets must be purchased by Oct. 26 to ensure an accurate headcount for food preparation purposes.

Any UMass-affiliated persons and guests are invited to the hike or dinner or both. Contact Dave Adams, 241G Integrated Sciences Building, 545-4711; or Ed Voigtman, 131 Goessmann Lab, 545-0293, to buy tickets.

Further details about hike routes, dress and parking will be sent to all ticket holders before the day of the event.

“If you came the past two years you know what a great time we had,” says Adams. “This one will be bigger and better.”
