Applications open for Citizens Police Academy

The UMass Police Department is offering its first Citizens Police Academy this fall, providing community members an opportunity to get an inside look at how law enforcement operates. Classes in the eight-session program will meet in October and November.

Chief Johnny Whitehead said classroom sessions will cover a wide range of topics including criminal and constitutional law, motor vehicle enforcement, and alcohol and drug enforcement. Participants will observe demonstrations from specialized units such as the K9, mounted, motorcycle and bicycle patrol units, as well as the tactical arrest and control team. Students will also participate in several hands-on learning scenarios.

The academy is open to students, faculty, staff and family members of the campus community as well as residents of the towns of Amherst and Hadley. Students who attend all eight sessions of three hours each will receive a certificate. Classes will begin at 6 p.m. and end no later than 9 p.m.

Classes will be held Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27, and Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 18.

Class size is limited to 20 participants. The application deadline is Sept. 12. No prior law enforcement knowledge is required. To obtain an application, visit www.umass.edu/umpd or contact Lt. Ian Cyr at 545-9425. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
