New WORLD Theater presents 'Ameriville'

“Ameriville,” directed by Chay Yew, will be performed by the Bronx-based ensemble Universes on Thursday, April 30 and Friday, May 1 at 8 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium. “Ameriville” is presented by New WORLD Theater.

In the show, Universes puts the state of the union under a microscope — race, poverty, politics, history and government — examining our country through the lens of Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans. “Ameriville” combines an innovative mix of poetry, music, movement and drama to get to the heart of this American tragedy.

Universes is an ensemble of writer-musician-performers who fuse poetry, theater, jazz, hip-hop, politics, blues, gospel, and Spanish boleros to create moving, challenging and entertaining theatrical works. The Bronx-based quartet of Gamal Abdel Chasten, Mildred Ruiz, William Ruiz aka Ninja and Steven Sapp have created their own brand of high-energy performance, rooted in hip-hop but drawing on a global multitude of lyrical and musical influences and performance styles.

Tickets are $15 general public; $8 for low-income patrons and senior citizens; $5 for students with valid ID. To purchase tickets, call the Fine Arts Center Box Office at 545-2511.
