Faculty discuss work of Polish artist Miroslaw Balka
A faculty panel will discuss the work of Polish artist Miroslaw Balka and his current exhibit at the University Gallery on Wednesday, March 11 at 5 p.m. in the gallery.
Catherine Portuges, professor of Comparative Literature and director of the Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies; Jenny Perlin, Five College visiting artist in Film Studies; and James E. Young, chair of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies, will touch upon Balka’s work in relation to the tragedies of recent European history, how his generation is coming to terms with that history, and the residue of memory.
Support for the event comes from the Polish Cultural Institute, New York; the Fine Arts Center Friend’s Artist Residency Fund; the Walter Raleigh Amesbury, Jr., and Cecile Dudley Amesbury Professorship for Teaching and Research in Polish Language, Literature and Culture; with assistance from the Gladstone Gallery, New York, and White Cube, London.
