Registration now open for Green School short course in November

Registration is open for the Green School, a comprehensive certificate short course for green industry professionals taught by UMass Extension specialists and University faculty, which begins Nov. 6.

The popular course is designed for landscape professionals, lawn care specialists, arborists and other horticultural practitioners wishing to gain an understanding of horticultural fundamentals and strategies, as well as their relationship to environmental quality. Green School students come away with the knowledge needed to make environmentally appropriate decisions related to turf and plant selection, arboriculture, plant maintenance, and pest and nutrient management.

Green School’s curriculum is based on research and information emphasizing environmental stewardship and integrated pest management (IPM). Participants develop an understanding of how proper management practices impact natural resources such as soil and water.

Students choose a “specialty track” when registering. Three specialty tracks are offered: turf management, landscape management, or - new this year - arboriculture, which is specifically geared toward professional arborists.

Green School is helpful for professionals preparing to take the Massachusetts Certified Arborist (MCA), Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist (MCH), or the Massachusetts Certified Landscape Professional (MCLP) examinations. Discounts on exam study material are offered for Green School students. MCA, MCH, and MCLP recertification credit is also available for individuals who currently hold these professional designations.

Green School runs Nov. 6 to Dec. 18. It is held one to two days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. p.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Milford.
