Lineup for INFORMS speakers series announced

The campus’ student chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) is sponsoring the Operations Research/Management Science fall speaker series, beginning Sept. 29.

The talks take place on scheduled Fridays at 11 a.m. in 112 Isenberg School of Management and are open to the public. After the talks, attendees may join the presenters for lunch at the University Club to discuss topics of interest and enjoy a meal.

The six speakers are:

Robin Lougee-Heimer of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center (Sept. 29), an expert in the use of analytics to provide solutions to challenging business problems and is the co-creator of the Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research. Her talk is titled "Advanced Applications of Operations Research at IBM."

William Hogan, the Raymond Plank Professor of Global Energy Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (Oct. 13).

Cynthia Barnhart of the department of civil and environmental engineering and the engineering systems division at MIT (Oct. 27), an expert on optimization approaches to airline industry problems who was awarded the Franz Edelman Prize for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Barnhart will speak on "Optimization Approaches to Airline Industry Challenges."

Andrew McCallum of the Department of Computer Science (Nov. 3), an expert on statistical machine learning applied to information extraction and document classification, will discuss "Bayesian Models of Social networks and Texts" and an application to the Enron investigation. He is a former vice president of research development at WhizBang Labs.

Les Servi of Lincoln Labs at MIT (Nov. 17) has also worked at Bell Laboratories and GTE. He holds seven patents and was awarded GTE's highest technical award in 1999. He is an expert on performance analysis of telecommunications systems and since 2000 has been at Lincoln Labs in the Advanced Networks and Applications group.

Nathaniel Whitaker of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (Dec. 1) develops numerical methods for solving differential equations, especially those which result from fluid mechanics. Whitaker's talk is titled "Some Mathematical Models in Medicine." Whitaker received the Distinguished Outreach Award last spring for establishing a Saturday math program for African-American students which evolved into a program to boost math skills and self-confidence of African-American students in the Amherst-Pelham public schools.

Support for the speaker series is provided by the Isenberg School of Management, the Department of Finance and Operations Management, the John F. Smith Memorial Fund, and INFORMS. Anna Nagurney, the John F. Smith Memorial Professor at the Isenberg School of Management, serves as the faculty advisor to the speaker series.
