Study seeks more juice-drinking postmenopausal women

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences is still looking for healthy postmenopausal women to participate in a continuing research study, now nearing completion, on the effects of juice consumption on hormone levels that could impact breast cancer risk.
 
Participants must meet the following requirements:

• Experienced a natural menopause and have not taken any hormones including estrogen replacement therapy over the past six months

• 48 to 64 years of age

• Not currently taking any prescription medications

• No prior medical history of cancer, diabetes, or thyroid conditions

Flags lowered for Boston soldier

Gov. Deval L. Patrick has ordered that the U.S. and Commonwealth flags be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Monday, Sept. 10, in honor of U.S. Army Sgt. Tyrone A. Hines of Boston.

Financial Aid Services relocating

Financial Aid Services Office is being renovated and the offices in 243 and 255 Whitmore will be closed from Sept. 28 until January 2013, according to director Suzanne Peters.

There will be a form drop-off location and counselors available in 171 Whitmore from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during this time. Other staff will be available on the 4th floor of New Africa House. Staff can also be reached by phone, fax and e-mail as those services will not change during the renovation.

Faculty hosting Sept. 13 reception for Subbaswamy

Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy will offer opening remarks at the first Faculty Senate meeting of the year on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m. in 227 Herter.

Following the meeting, the Faculty Senate is sponsoring a reception in the Fine Arts Center atrium for the chancellor to greet faculty and librarians.

"Chancellor Swamy brings us a rare combination of high intelligence and aspirations, a wealth of relevant experience in academia and higher education administration, realistic grounding, and a wonderful sense of humor," said senate secretary Ernest May.

Annual Metawampe hike and dinner set for Oct. 14

The 105th annual Metawampe hike on Mount Toby and post-hike dinner at the Sunderland Congregational Church are planned for Sunday, Oct. 14.

The hike steps off at noon from the east side of Mount Toby just off Route 63. The Metawampe hike is a 5.6-mile, moderately paced, but leisurely, three-hour trek with several stops along the way, including the Metawampe cabin. Hikers should arrive at the church parking lot at the corners of routes 47 and 116 no later than 11:45 a.m. The group will ride to the trailhead for the noon start.

Campus Center Way closed to through traffic Sept. 8

The contractor for the Old Power Plant Demolition Project will be closing a portion of Campus Center Way, from Holdsworth Way to Natural Resources Way, on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
 
The Campus Parking Garage will remain open and accessible via Holdsworth Way.
 
The work zone will be open, as necessary, to emergency vehicles only. UMass Police will direct traffic.

Reservations open for meals prepared by HTM students at Marriott Center

Meals at the Marriott, lunches and dinners prepared and served by Hospitality and Tourism Management students, are being offered this semester starting Sept. 25-27 at the Marriott Center for Hospitality Management on the 11th floor of the Campus Center.

Lunches are $8 per person and are served noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Dinners are $13 per person and are served Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m.

Meal prices include state tax; students are tax-exempt with proper ID.

For the first time, reservations can be made online and payments can be made with a credit card.

'Celebrate Amherst Block Party' is Sept. 13

Students and the area community are invited to a block party in downtown Amherst on Thursday, Sept. 13 from 6-10 p.m.

A large section of downtown will be closed to vehicular traffic and opened up to fun. The event will feature two stages with bands and DJs, food from downtown Amherst’s wide array of restaurants, and entertainment of all sorts.

There will be shuttles from satellite parking at the Amherst Regional High School and the UMass Amherst Visitors Center.
