'Celebrate Amherst Block Party' is Sept. 13

Students and the area community are invited to a block party in downtown Amherst on Thursday, Sept. 13 from 6-10 p.m.

A large section of downtown will be closed to vehicular traffic and opened up to fun. The event will feature two stages with bands and DJs, food from downtown Amherst’s wide array of restaurants, and entertainment of all sorts.

There will be shuttles from satellite parking at the Amherst Regional High School and the UMass Amherst Visitors Center.

Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies presents Doctoral Lecture Series

The Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies will inaugurate a new series of lectures by advanced Ph.D. students on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. at the institute, which is located at 758 North Pleasant St.
 
Hannah Pollin-Galay, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Jewish history at Tel Aviv University and has most recently been developing her dissertation as a graduate fellow in residence at the institute, will discuss “Language, Culture and Testimony: A Case Study of Lithuanian Jewish Survivors and Their Video Testimonies.”

UMass Yoga offers free introductory yoga classes

UMass Yoga is offering free introductory yoga classes in the Newman Center during the first week of the semester, Sept. 4-6.

Come learn about this ancient and modern system of self-care. All levels of experience are welcome. Classes are open to all, however each class size is limited to the first 30 arrivals.

Class times are 3-4:30 and 4:45-6:15 pm. in the main floor meeting room beside the Newman Center chapel.

Science Café series opens Sept. 10 with 'How to Build an Organism'

This fall’s Science Café series kicks off Monday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Esselon Café in Hadley with “How to Build an Organism: a DIY Guide,” presented by Craig Albertson, assistant professor of Biology.

 
Albertson will discuss some of his work exploring the design and diversification of the animal body form, proceeding from the genetic blueprint to principles of animal development.
 
Light snacks are provided and drinks are available for purchase. All Science Cafe events are free and designed for a general audience.

Flags lowered Sept. 1 for North Adams soldier killed in Afghanistan

Gov. Deval Patrick has ordered that the United States and Commonwealth flags be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, Sept. 1, in honor of U.S. Army PFC Michael R. Demarsico II of North Adams, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 16..

Dean of Students seeks hearing board members

The Dean of Students Office is recruiting members of the university community to serve as Student Conduct Hearing Board members for the 2012-13 academic year.
 
Membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students, staff and faculty who meet minimum eligibility requirements.
 
Hearing boards are composed of students, faculty and staff who have displayed a commitment to upholding the community standards set forth by the Code of Student Code and by the mission of the university and are trained in the Code of Student Conduct processes.

Gov. Deval  Patrick has ordered that the United States and Commonwealth flags be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday, Aug. 29, in honor of U.S. Army Major Steven Brothers of Arlington, who died May 30.

Retired Faculty Association's first fall meeting is Sept. 12

Roland ChiltonThe first fall meeting of the UMass Retired Faculty Association is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon in 162-65 Campus Center.

The business meeting, with coffee and cookies, will begin at 10 am followed at 11 by the featured presentation with Roland Chilton, professor emeritus of Sociology, on "Rethinking the Great American Crime Decline: 1990-2005."
