Free introductory yoga classes

Newmass Yoga is offering free introductory yoga classes in the Newman Center during the first week of the semester, Jan. 22-24.
 
Come learn about this ancient and modern system of self-care. All levels of experience are welcome. Classes are open to all, however each class size is limited to the first 25 arrivals.

Class times are 3-4:30 and 4:45-6:15 pm. in the main floor meeting room beside the Newman Center chapel.

New course proposals

The following new course proposals have been submitted to the Faculty Senate Office for review and approval and are listed here for faculty review and comment. Comments on any new course proposal should be submitted to Ernest May, secretary of the Faculty Senate, at senate@senate.umass.edu.

ANIMLSCI 365, “Fundamentals in Veterinary and Biomedical Laboratory Techniques,” 4 credits; Instructor: Dr. Lisa M. Minter; Lecture and Laboratory. Lecture emphasizes theoretical basis of veterinary clinical procedures, techniques, and instrumentation in hematology, microbiology and parasitology.

MWPHE Professional Development Awards available

Massachusetts Women in Public Higher Education (MWPHE), a non-profit organization, is offering a Professional Development Award in the amount of $1,000.

Eligible applicants must be UMass Amherst woman employees and members of MWPHE, which is committed to strengthening the status of women as professionals. The organization will award a total of three Professional Development Awards in the amount of $1,000 each. Winners will be selected from the women employee applicants of each sector: university, sate university and community college.

NERCOMP workshop, 'Mobile unSIG: Roam If You Want To,' set for Feb. 11

The NorthEast Regional Computing Program (NERCOMP) workshop, "Mobile unSIG: Roam If You Want To," will be held Monday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Campus Center.
 
This unSIG brings together all members of the higher education community interested in the impacts and evolution of mobile technology on campus. A rapidly evolving sector, mobile technology is challenging all members of the university community and the unSIG format allows for a day of discussion, collaboration, learning, exchange of ideas and best practices.

Local production of 'Fiddler on the Roof' coming to Bowker stage

Amherst Leisure Services is staging "Fiddler on the Roof" at Bowker Auditorium on Jan. 17-20 and 24-27.

Nominations sought for Chancellor's Citation Awards

The campus community is invited to submit nominations for the Chancellor's Citation Award, which recognizes outstanding work performance by University staff.

Members of the campus community may nominate any benefited exempt or non-exempt staff member who has demonstrated outstanding performance in helping the University achieve its goals and objectives.

Worcester DC Oak Room open for dining

The Worcester Dining Commons Oak Room is now open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., two weeks earlier than usual, reports Ken Toong, executive director of Auxiliary Enterprises. "We welcome staff to join us for lunch and dinner in a sparkling clean peaceful atmosphere."

Male adolescent participants needed for Kinesiology study

Researchers in the Kinesiology Department are seeking male adolescents to participate in a study to help assess sedentary behavior. For completing the study, participants will earn $100.
 
The goal of the project is to validate a newly developed survey that will measure where, why and how much people sit each day. The study consists of five study visits over a four-month period, which includes three months of no study activity.
