DEFA Summer Film Institute explores East Germany’s Cold War images of US

The DEFA Film Library will welcome 30 international scholars from July 7-14 to participate in its seventh biennial Summer Film Institute. This year’s institute, held on the Smith College campus and titled “DEFA & Amerika: Culture Wars, Culture Contact,” will explore East Germany’s filmic relationship to the USA during the Cold War.
 
Film screenings, workshops and readings will explore how films crossed the East/West border, carrying cultural representations and enabling personal and professional relationships as well as economic transactions.

Flags lowered for Dudley soldier killed in accident

Gov. Deval L. Patrick has ordered the U.S. and Commonwealth flags be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, June 22 in honor of U.S. Army PFC Christopher P. Dona of Dudley who died June 13 in a training accident at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga.
 

Temporary vehicle route to Student Union June 18 to July 31

Beginning Tuesday, June 18, through the end of July, a temporary delivery vehicle route will be in place extending from a point west of South College to the Student Union ellipse. The normal delivery route via Hicks Way adjacent to the south side of the Campus Garage will be closed to through traffic for utility work. Accessible parking in Thompson Lot 64 will be temporarily relocated.

Section of N. Pleasant Street reduced to one lane through July 1

North Pleasant Street in the Hasbrouck area has been reduced to one lane accommodating both north- and south-bound traffic for two weeks for utility work.  During the period from June 17 to July 1, there may be a brief closure of both lanes at a time scheduled to cause the least amount of disruption possible.

Fire evacuation drills and alarm system testing begins June 17

Annual fire evacuation drills and testing of fire alarm systems begin June 17 and will be conducted within academic and administrative buildings through July 3, according to Ed Mientka of Environmental Health and Safety.

The program is being coordinated through a joint effort of Physical Plant and Environmental Health and Safety. Fire evacuation drills help to ensure that occupants are familiar with the sound of the fire alarm system, are knowledgeable of all evacuation routes, and that immediate evacuation from the building is necessary.

Juniper Summer Writing Institute faculty to give readings

The Juniper Summer Writing Institute will host seven nights of poetry and fiction readings by acclaimed faculty and writers in residence from June 23-29.
 
All readings begin at 7:30 p.m. in 135 Integrated Sciences Building. Readings are open to the public for a suggested donation of $5-10.
 
The series kicks off June 23 with Mark Doty and Joy Williams. Doty is the author of nine books of poems, including Fire to Fire: New & Selected Poems, and five volumes of nonfiction. Permaculture Your Campus conference is June 23-26

The campus is hosting its second annual Permaculture Your Campus conference on June 23–26. Discount registration is available for students, faculty and staff from other universities, food service managers, chefs and sustainability coordinators who wish to attend.
 
Kicking off the conference will be urban revitalization strategist Majora Carter, co-founder and CEO of StartUpSouthBronx, who will deliver the keynote speech, “Home(town) Security,” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 23 in the Campus Center Auditorium. This event is open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m.
