Lower Hicks Way closed July 8-31

Lower Hicks Way will be closed from Monday, July 8 through Wednesday, July 31 for curb work and final paving. In addition, the Upper/Lower Hicks Way intersection will be closed from Monday, July 15 through Thursday, July 25.

The sequencing of closures is as follows:

From July 8-14, access to the full length of Upper Hicks Way will be maintained via Lot 71 off of Massachusetts Avenue (as shown in Map 1).

From July 15-25, when construction is scheduled to close the Upper/Lower Hicks Way intersection, access to Upper Hicks Way (north) will be maintained via the Grinnell Access Road off of

DEFA Summer Film Institute explores East Germany’s Cold War images of US

The DEFA Film Library will welcome 30 international scholars from July 7-14 to participate in its seventh biennial Summer Film Institute. This year’s institute, held on the Smith College campus and titled “DEFA & Amerika: Culture Wars, Culture Contact,” will explore East Germany’s filmic relationship to the USA during the Cold War.
 
Film screenings, workshops and readings will explore how films crossed the East/West border, carrying cultural representations and enabling personal and professional relationships as well as economic transactions.

Flags lowered for Dudley soldier killed in accident

Gov. Deval L. Patrick has ordered the U.S. and Commonwealth flags be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, June 22 in honor of U.S. Army PFC Christopher P. Dona of Dudley who died June 13 in a training accident at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga.
