New Recreation Center open for business
The new, $50-million Recreation Center opened today, ushering in a new era of campus health and fitness opportunities.
John McCutcheon, athletic director, made the announcement Oct. 30 in a broadcast e-mail to undergraduates. “The Recreation Center will serve as a major new focus of campus life and student activity, where you can benefit from the latest in exercise and training equipment,” he said. “We urge you to take advantage of the many opportunities that it offers.”
The 120,000-square-foot facility on Commonwealth Avenue features a weight and fitness area spanning two of the three building floors, locker and toilet facilities, a three-court gym that is dividable, three multipurpose rooms, a juice bar and lounge space, and new administration offices.
The facility will be free of charge to full-time undergraduates during the fall and spring semesters and Intersession. The facility is also open to faculty, staff, graduate students, retirees and associates, such as spouses, domestic partners and dependents. Alumni may also join.
Faculty and staff will pay $150 per semester or $300 for both semesters, which includes Intersession. A year-round membership, which includes summer, is $450.
Graduate students, retirees and associates will pay $125 per semester.
