Campus launches Google Apps for undergrads

Starting Sept. 29, undergraduates will be able to sign up for Google Apps. The new service is an implementation of Google Apps for Education, a suite of collaborative software that Google offers educational institutions at no cost.

By signing up for Google, the campus’s 19,000 undergraduates can choose to have their @student.umass.edu e-mail delivered to Google Mail and begin using the other apps in the Google Apps suite, including Google Docs, Google Calendar and Google Sites.

Undergraduates are not required to sign up for Google Apps. If they do choose to sign up, they are not required to have their e-mail delivered to Google Mail. Due to privacy and confidentiality concerns, faculty, staff and graduate students are not eligible for Google Apps accounts at this time, according to the Office of Information Technologies.

“Our partnership with Google benefits the University and our students,” said John Dubach, chief information officer and special assistant to the chancellor. “It allows us to provide high-quality services and enhanced e-mail capabilities and, at the same time, refocus our IT resources on other projects.”

The campus joins other large research institutions, including Arizona State University, Northwestern University and the University of Southern California, that participate in the Google Apps for Education program.
