Undergraduate awarded $3,000 summer research grant

Eric Johnson, a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, has been awarded a $3,000 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) by the American Society of Plant Biologists.

The goal of the SURF program is to provide opportunities for students to pursue meaningful research in plant biology early in their college years. The program targets students who have just completed their sophomore year. Johnson won for a project titled “Probing Intracellular Hydrogen Peroxide Condition in Wild type and Mutants Defective in Stress-signaling.”

In addition to the grant, the award includes a one-year student membership in ASPB and $575 for travel to Plant Biology 2010 in Montreal. A $500 stipend is being awarded to Alice Cheung, professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, who is serving as Johnson’s mentor on the research project.
