Academic Outreach efforts recognized
Faculty from History, Communication and Sport Management and the president of Springfield Technical Community College were honored April 15 at the presentation of the Distinguished Academic Outreach Awards.
Chancellor Robert C. Holub and Provost Charlena Seymour participate in the presentation in the Student Union Ballroom, which honored outstanding contributions to community partnerships and the quality of community engaged scholarship.
History professor Joyce A. Berkman was recognized for her research that served and promoted collaboration with off-campus partners and communities.
Associate professor Mari Castañeda, Communication, and Todd Crosset, Sport Management, were cited “for teaching that immerses students in the most critical issues of the day, in a manner that has a clear and positive impact on external communities and on the development of students as scholars and citizens.”
STCC President Ira Rubenzahl received the Outreach Community Partner Award, which recognizes a person from outside the University itself who has drawn on University resources and programs to make a significant and lasting contribution to an external community.
“Not only are we honoring four people who have contributed greatly to scholarly engagement with the community in this region, but we are celebrating the Carnegie Foundation’s recent designation of UMass Amherst as a ‘community-engaged university,’” said Sharon Fross, vice provost for Outreach.
