Work aims at improving pedestrian safety on Mass. Ave.

Several changes are underway on Massachusetts Avenue in an effort to improve pedestrian safety, according to Jim Hunt of Facilities and Campus Planning.

A test application of “rumble strips,” a series of grooves in the pavement that alert motorists will be cut into west- and east-bound lanes near crosswalks. There is also new “PED XING” lettering on the westbound side of Massachusetts Avenue.

Signs are being planned for crosswalks to warn pedestrians to be aware of two lanes of traffic.

Crossing guards have been in place for some time at the Sunset Avenue crossing of Massachusetts Avenue and in front of Whitmore Hall at Lincoln Avenue. This program will continue. Additional crossing guard programs have been put in place, from 4-6 p.m. at the Presidents Drive/School of Management crossing on Massachusetts Avenue.

According to Patrick Archbald, deputy police chief, plainclothes officers are monitoring the Massachusetts Avenue crosswalks to increase traffic control and pedestrian safety in the area.

Archbald has also begun an awareness campaign for students, using door hangers and handouts, to inform students of pedestrian safety issues on all campus roadways, with a special emphasis placed on Massachusetts Avenue crossings.

Campus officials are considering further near- and long-term safety improvements in collaboration with UMPD and the Transportation Center.
