Cole thanks senate, offers advice to Holub

Thomas W. Cole, Jr.As the Faculty Senate wound up its business for the academic year on May 15, interim Chancellor Thomas W. Cole, Jr. used the opportunity to share a few observations about his term on campus.

Cole thanked the senate for welcoming him to campus last fall. “I owe you a debt of gratitude for your hospitality.”

He praised the selection of Robert C. Holub as the next chancellor, who is expected to visit campus a few times before officially taking office in August. “I’ll be around a couple of months and offload as much as I can to him,” said Cole.

Cole also offered an upbeat assessment of the institution.

“This is a great time to be at UMass Amherst,” he said. “All the vital signs are good.”

Citing lessons he’d gleaned from his time leading the campus, Cole offered some suggestions for the incoming chancellor:

“Be a scholar.”

“Know something about union contracts.”

“Make good decisions with great speed and without error.”

“Speak eloquently in words that charm and never offend.”

“When you have to tell someone where to go, do it so they look forward to the journey.”

Following Cole’s comments, senator Maurianne Adams read a resolution praising his leadership and contributions to the campus community.
