Medical Reserve Corps unveils new website
The campus’ 300-member Medical Reserve Corps has launched a new website to serve as a resource for current and potential volunteers, health professionals and the public.
The site offers information on emergency planning, training opportunities and events, along with links to regional, state and national preparedness organizations. The website is hosted by University Health Services (UHS), which co-founded the group with the School of Nursing in 2005.
The Medical Reserve Corps is the country’s first curriculum-incorporated unit, with students in the School of Nursing’s undergraduate and second bachelor’s degree programs taking part. MRC involvement offers volunteers educational, research and leadership opportunities in the fields of nursing, public health and emergency preparedness.
The group has coordinated several major preparedness drills, including a simulated large-scale bacterial meningitis outbreak held last April at the Mullins Center. Campus, regional and state officials assessed public health emergency communications systems and analyzed the effectiveness of emergency dispensing site operations.
For information about the MRC or to volunteer, contact unit director Ann Becker at 577-5193 or by e-mail at umassmrc@uhs.umass.edu.
