Student awarded Boren scholarship to study in Turkey
Ben Feinsilver, a senior Finance major from Princeton, has been awarded a National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren scholarship to study at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey during the next year. The scholarship ranges from $10,000 per semester to $20,000 per year or $8,000 per summer depending on the length of study.
The NSEP Boren scholarships are nationally competitive and provide support to U.S. undergraduates who pursue the study of languages and cultures currently underrepresented in study abroad and critical to U.S. national security.
Feinsilver interned last summer at the American Turkish Council in Washington, D.C., where he expanded his knowledge and understanding of the diplomatic, economic, military and educational relationships between Turkey and the U.S.
Only six students in the entire U.S. received an NSEP scholarship to study in Turkey during the coming year. The total number of applicants for NSEP was 800, and 141 students received awards for study abroad in a variety of countries. The highest number of awards was made to students going to China (25), Egypt (21), and Russia (13).
In preparation for his stay in Turkey, Feinsilver has been studying Turkish at the University of Chicago during June and July, and also attended an orientation program in Washington, D.C. for NSEP awardees where he was able to meet Congressman Daniel Boren, the son of the senator who initiated this scholarship program.
Upon graduation, students receiving an NSEP award are required to work for the U.S. government in an area related to their study abroad.
