Senate endorses resolution on scholarly publishing
A resolution aimed at promoting the use of open access academic journals and repositories was adopted May 10 by the Faculty Senate.
Citing the sharply rising cost of academic journals and databases, the Research Library Council proposed the resolution to encourage faculty, librarians, staff and administrators to support and use new and innovative methods of scholarly communication whenever possible.
The council also urges faculty to become familiar with the pricing and business practices of journals and journal publishers and to support those whose pricing and accessibility policies promote broad and continuing access to scholarship.
Faculty are also encouraged to “exert a positive influence on the direction of scholarly publishing through the choices they make in the submission of papers, the commitment of time to refereeing activities, and participation in editorial work.”
Faculty, said the council, should also carefully consider copyright provisions with publishers to insure greater freedom to disseminate their work. In addition, the council said faculty and administrators should consider scholarly publishing issues as the promotion and tenure system evolves.
