Pi Kappa Phi takes bitter-cold plunge to support Special Olympics

Pi Kappa PhiTen members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity recently participated in the Passion Plunge for Special Olympics Massachusetts at Nantasket Beach in Hull. To sponsor their jump into the bitter-cold Atlantic Ocean, members raised more than $3,000 by contributing funds themselves, asking family and friends for support, and receiving online donations.

“It was just humbling to see how many donations we received from the community,” said Kevin Libby of Pi Kappa Phi.

Each fraternity brother had to raise at least $250 for the Feb. 3 event. Overall, the Passion Plunge raised more than $284,000, which will fund athletic programs and services for people with disabilities.

The Pi Kappa Phi fraternity chapter at UMass Amherst is involved in national philanthropic efforts through Push America, founded in 1977 by the fraternity to instill lifelong service in its members and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. Upcoming fund-raising events will include the Journey for Hope cross-country bike tour and a five-kilometer road race in the spring.
