Symposium to focus on learning applications of Tablet PCs

Tablet PCA symposium for UMass system faculty and staff on “Teaching and Learning With Tablet Personal Computers” is being held March 31 and April 1, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Collaborative Services Facility in Shrewsbury.

Sponsored by the President's Office and the Information Technology Council's Subcommittee on Academic Technology, with support from GovConnection, the symposium will enable attendees to examine a selection of tablet PCs, see how their unique features may enhance instructors' opportunities for student-faculty interaction, and explore support and infrastructure issues associated with tablet PCs.

Presenters will include faculty from the Amherst and Lowell campuses, University of Virginia, University of New Hampshire and Dakota State University. A Microsoft representative will discuss tablet software. Representatives from Acer, Gateway, Hewlett Packard, Toshiba, and Viewsonic will also be on hand to demonstrate their products and answer questions. Most presenters will be involved in both days.

On the first day of the event, the emphasis will be on “Infrastructure and Support,” with presentations, discussions and exhibits. The program is primarily for technical staff, but others are welcome.

“Teaching with Tablets” will be the focus of the second day. Presentations, discussions and exhibits will be geared to faculty, but others may attend.

Attendance and parking are free. Lunch and refreshment breaks will be provided.

To register, send an e-mail to TabletPC@umassp.edu with your name, department, campus and day(s) you wish to attend, or call (617) 287-7137. The deadline to register is March 25. Because of security concerns at the Shrewsbury facility, which is shared with IT firms, only faculty and staff who have pre-registered will be able to attend the conference.

For information, contact Mark Schlesinger, associate vice president for Academic Technology (mschlesinger@umassp.edu; (617) 287-7754).
