Officials from UMass Amherst and the Friends of the W.E.B. Du Bois Homesite in Great Barrington hosted a special preview of the site on Thursday, July 24. The special event, featuring plans to develop a memorial to the life of W.E.B. Du Bois at the Du Bois Boyhood Homesite, was scheduled for outgoing Chancellor Thomas W. Cole, Jr. and showcased recent improvements, including a parking lot, signage and a pathway to a memorial boulder installed in 1969.

The Office of Information Technologies will conduct a major hardware upgrade on Saturday, July 26 from 8 a.m. to noon. As a result, the following services and resources will be unavailable during this upgrade period:
Physical Plant staff are working extra hours to clean up damage inflicted by two days of heavy rain on campus and are preparing for new thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast for Thursday.

UMass police and other campus emergency operations officials conducted a successful emergency drill this month to evaluate police response time and test activation of the Campus Alerts system. In addition, the notification and assembly of the campus’ emergency management team was rehearsed.

Computer scientists are working with Massachusetts health care professionals to analyze medical procedures, including blood transfusions and chemotherapy treatments, with the goal of improving patient safety. The team is also analyzing the flow of patients in emergency rooms to reduce waiting time.

Nonprofit groups and town governments in western Massachusetts struggling to make sense of large amounts of data can now receive free statistical consulting from Statistics in the Community (STATCOM), a volunteer organization housed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Campus officials are evaluating the future use of the Marine Research Station in Gloucester. It recently ceased operations following the death of its sole researcher and director, Herbert O. Hultin, 73, of Rockport, a food science professor.

Jazz great Billy Taylor, one of the founders of Jazz in July back in 1982, gave his final performance for the program at Bowker Auditorium on July 17. Taylor, who turns 87 this week, has been a stalwart of jazz education and a key personality in the Jazz in July program where he has supported and mentored more than 1,500 young people over the years.

Polymer scientist Maria Santore and her colleagues have developed a novel surface containing tiny nanoparticles that can capture and manipulate much larger particles in a flowing solution with great precision. Santore’s research, performed in collaboration with chemist Vincent Rotello and chemical engineer Jeffrey Davis, was recently featured in Nature Nanotechnology.
