Campbell’s photos exhibited in Amherst

“Getting From Here to There: Photographs from Yockenthwaite to Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales, England” by Elisa K Campbell will be exhibited from Dec. 30 to Feb. 1 at the Henion Bakery, 174 North Pleasant St., in Amherst.

“The Yorkshire Dales are one of my altogether favorite places; they are also among the most scenic areas of England,” says Campbell, staff assistant at the Office of Information Technologies. “Many Americans have seen some typical scenery of the area in the popular TV series, ‘All Creatures Great and Small.’ Kettlewell was the setting for the film “Calendar Girls.’”

The show exhibits some of the photographs Campbell took during June 2006 in Wharfedale. She was participating in an Earthwatch Expedition doing archeology near Kettlewell, one of the many villages in the Dales.

“The English countryside often is crisscrossed with trails that are open to the public for walking; since the Yorkshire Dales are a national park, there are even more trails than usual,” she says. “The trails cross working farmland, often with sheep or cattle, so it’s crucial to keep the livestock in their fields while the walkers come and go. As I walked the Dales Way, I became fascinated with the many kinds of gates and stiles I had to negotiate – and they have become one focus of this exhibit. The views of the river Wharfe and its valley from the dales, and the wonderfully wild churchyard in Kettlewell, complete the show.”
