Obituary: Patrick 'Pete' Mazur, retired janitor
Patrick W. "Pete" Mazur, 95, of Ware, a retired janitor with Physical Plant, died Oct. 8 at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds.
Born in Ware, he lived there for most of his life.
He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 8th Coast Artillery, serving in the European, African, and Middle Eastern theater campaigns. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the Hurtgen Forest and western Czechoslovakia. He was later taken out of combat to serve as military governor of the small village of Bad Mergantheim, where he used his fluent Polish to translate to Polish Jews living there.
He retired from the University in 1976 with more than 10 years of service.
He leaves his daughters, Alberta Martin and her husband, Francis, of Easthampton, and Edwina Hodgkins and her husband, Dennis, of West Springfield; a sister, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His wife, Frances L. (Kmon) Mazur, died in 2002.
