Researchers share award for medical entomology article on bed bugs
An article co-authored by several campus researchers that was published last November in the Journal of Medical Entomology has won an Editors’ Choice Award from the Entomological Society of America (ESA).
The article, “Biochemical and Molecular Analysis of Deltamethrin Resistance in the Common Bed Bug (Hemiptera: Cimicidae)” was written by Kyong Sup Yoon, adjunct assistant professor in Natural Resources Conservation; Deok Ho Kwon, a postdoctoral researcher in agricultural biotechnology at Seoul National University in South Korea; Joseph P. Strycharz, a Ph.D. candidate in the Veterinary and Animal Sciences; Craig S. Hollingsworth, adjunct assistant professor in Plant, Soil and Insect Sciences; Si Hyeock Lee, associate professor in the department of agricultural biotechnology at Seoul National University; and J. Marshall Clark, professor in Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
The six scientists will share the $1,000 prize, which will be presented at the ESA annual meeting in December.
“Bed bug infestations are increasing at an alarming rate due, in part, to insecticide resistance,” said Walter J. Tabachnick, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Entomology. “This paper identified mutations in the bed bug gene, causing deltamethrin resistant bedbugs. The identification of these mutations will lead to DNA-based diagnostic techniques to use for efficient and cost effective monitoring of bed bug resistance to insecticides. This paper was widely reported in the international news media, demonstrating its importance to public health. It effectively illustrates medical entomology’s use of state-of-the-art, basic research and quality science to address important public health issues.”
Founded in 1889, ESA is a non-profit organization committed to serving the scientific and professional needs of nearly 6,000 entomologists and individuals in related disciplines. ESA’s membership includes representatives from educational institutions, government, health agencies, and private industry.
