CPPA chooses 7 for public policy grants workshop

Seven faculty members have been named as the first fellows in the Center for Public Policy and Administration’s Public Policy Grants Workshop.

The fellows were selected following applications they submitted in May to work collaboratively during the upcoming academic year on grant proposals that have significant or potential policy dimensions. The fellows and their proposed projects are:

• Sylvia Brandt, Resource Economics and CPPA, “Social Costs of Childhood Asthma”

• Aline Gubrium, Public Health, “Assessing the Use of Digital Storytelling as a Tool to Explore Understandings of Unintended Pregnancy”

• Jos? Angel Hern?ndez, History, “Repatriation and Public Policy in Mexico and the U.S.”

• Janice Irvine, Sociology, “Sexuality Research as Dirty Work: Culture and Stigma in Science”

• David Mednicoff, Legal Studies and CPPA, “Rules of Law and Laws of Rule in Contemporary Arab Politics”

• Emily West, Communication, “Consumer Subjectivity in Health Care: A Communication Perspective on Frameworks for Understanding Health”

• Melissa Wooten, Sociology, “Producing Cultural Capital: The Interaction Among Schools and Community Organizations”

The fellows will meet 12 times over the course of the academic year to discuss and receive feedback from one another on their proposals-in-progress. They will also attend panels and engage in other mentoring activities designed to assist with them with a range of grant-seeking processes: identifying and approaching potential sponsors, crafting effective proposals, understanding the grant review process, connecting their proposed research to broader impacts and policy, and using on-campus grant-seeking resources.

With support from the Mellon Mutual Mentoring (M3) Initiative in the Office of Faculty Development, as well as the colleges of Humanities and Fine Arts and Social and Behavioral Sciences, the fellows will receive funds to bring in mentors or collaborators from outside the campus to assist with their proposals. These external mentors will also give talks to the campus community about their work through the Center for Public Policy and Administration’s speaker series.

The workshop will be convened by Joya Misra, professor of Sociology and Public Policy, with support from CPPA associate director for research Susan Newton. Additional information about the workshop is available by contacting them.
