Faculty participate in computational workshop in Germany
Several faculty members participated in an international workshop on computational methods held Jan. 22-24 at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
Organized by Physics professor Jon Machta, Polymer Science professor Murugappan Muthukumar and Dieter W. Heermann of Heidelberg, the joint “Workshop on the Monte Carlo Method” attracted about 50 participants from around the world.
This was the second workshop organized by the two universities. The first, held in Amherst in 2007, focused generally on the development and use of numerical methods in the fields of mathematics, physics, biology and medicine. Last month’s session concentrated on Monte Carlo methods, which are used intensively by engineers, natural scientists, and social scientists. UMass Amherst and Heidelberg share a great deal of common ground in the use and development of computational methods.
Muthukumar, Machta and Boris Svistunov, professor of Physics, gave talks during the workshop.
Support for the workshop was provided by Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences. The next joint workshop is scheduled to be held in Amherst in 2010.
February 20, 2009.
