Swain honored as state's top fire and life safety educator
Mike Swain, Fire Safety Services supervisor with Environmental Health and Safety, was recognized Sept. 23 as the Massachusetts Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year.
The award was presented by State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan during the 14th annual Massachusetts Fire and Life Safety Education Conference in Taunton. The award program and conference are sponsored by the state Department of Fire Services.
Swain was cited for his outstanding effort and contributions to fire safety education on campus, within the fraternity and sorority system and nationally through the Center for Campus Fire Safety. According to the Department of Fire Services, Swain “has tirelessly spent his whole career making college campuses safer through education.” The award also honored his “unrelenting enthusiasm for the work both on and off the clock and his ability to mentor other fire and life safety educators.”
Swain is a past president and the current secretary of the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts. He has been a member of the National Fire Protection Association Education Section since 1988. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Center for Campus Fire Safety.
