Motyka leads Cleaning Industry Trainers Guild

Jim Motyka, supervisor of janitors for the dining commons, is serving as the first president of the Cleaning Industry Trainers Guild, a national group that promotes best practices in institutional hygiene.

The guild was formed last September and has about 50 members, says Motyka, who was named “Trainer of the Year” last summer at the National OS1 Users Symposium in Virginia.

(OS1) is a green cleaning program that stresses health and employs a standardized system that is measurable, sustainable and backed up by scientific data. Moytka is responsible for teaching the (OS1) system to 120 full-time and student custodians who work in the dining commons.

In his role as president of the guild, Motyka says he wants to focus on two goals: “Cleaning for health is first and foremost. The other big thing is to treat janitors as first-class citizens.”

The guild has also started a newsletter, the Trainers Guild Gazette, for its members.
