Carbaugh appointed Fulbright professor in Finland

Donal CarbaughProfessor Donal Carbaugh, Department of Communication, has been appointed the Fulbright Foundation’s Bicentennial Chair and Distinguished Professor at the University of Helsinki for the 2007-08 academic year.

The Fulbright Bicentennial Chair is the oldest and most established of the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs and was created in 1976 to institutionalize the teaching of American history, culture, and language at the University of Helsinki. Currently, the Renvall Institute of the University of Helsinki, where the chair is located, offers North American studies up to the Ph.D. degree. The Bicentennial Chair is an important resource to other Finnish and European universities and has played a crucial role in developing the interdisciplinary approach to American studies found at the University of Helsinki and elsewhere.

Carbaugh’s latest book, “Cultures in Conversation,” was recently designated the Outstanding Book in International and Intercultural Communication by the National Communication Association.

A member of the faculty since 1986, Carbaugh has chaired the Faculty Senate’s International Studies Council for the past three years.
