Bushouse awarded Ian Axford Fellowship to New Zealand

Brenda BushouseBrenda Bushouse, assistant professor of Political Science and Public Policy, has been awarded the Ian Axford Fellowship in Public Policy to study early childhood policies in New Zealand from February to August 2008.

Based in the ministry of education, she will study the implementation of the 20-Hours Free Programme, a new subsidy program for preschool-age children. Bushouse will compare the New Zealand subsidy program with state universal preschool programs in the U.S.

A New Zealand version of a Fulbright award, the fellowship is intended to reinforce ties between New Zealand and the U.S. by enabling Americans of high intellectual ability and leadership potential to come to New Zealand to gain experience and build contacts in the field of public policy development. The program also helps improve the practice of public policy by the cross-fertilization of ideas and experience in the two countries and build a network of public policy experts and encourage ongoing policy exchange on both sides of the Pacific.

As part of the fellowship, Bushouse is expected to spend a substantial part of her fellowship traveling within the country for her research and also to give presentations of her work at universities and relevant organizations.
