Obituary: John A. Chandler, professor emeritus of Chemistry
John Allard Chandler, 74, of Amherst, professor emeritus of Chemistry, died March 4 after an extended illness.
Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, he and his sister grew up partly in the city and partly on their aunt and uncle’s farm.
He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ohio University, where he received a B.S. in chemistry with minors in physics and math in 1955. He received his M.S. in chemistry in 1957 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 1959.
He joined the Chemistry faculty in 1959. For most of his career, he taught the first-year Chemistry 111/112 and by his estimate had taught more than 20,000 students, including the children and grandchildren of former students. His classroom excellence and dedication were recognized in 1986 when he received the prestigious Distinguished Teaching Award.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Joann (Hilliard); sons Charlie, of Amherst, and Jack, of Singapore, a daughter, Michelle, of Amherst, and eight grandchildren.
Calling hours are Monday, March 12 at 10 a.m. at the Douglass Funeral Home, 87 North Pleasant St., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m.
Friends, neighbors, and colleagues are invited to an informal reception at Hickory Ridge Country Club on West Pomeroy Lane.
A fund to provide an annual scholarship to a Chemistry student is being established in his name at Florence Savings Bank. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the fund in lieu of flowers.
