Wallace awarded grant for Etruscan Texts Project

Rex WallaceRex Wallace, professor and chair of the Department of Classics, has received a $10,000 grant to continue work on an online database of Etruscan inscriptions recovered from current archaeological excavations.

The grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation to the Etruscan Texts Project will support the ongoing development of the database, which is accompanied by epigraphic and linguistic commentary.

According to Wallace, the Etruscan language, which was spoken during the 1st millennium BCE in ancient Etruria (modern Tuscany), was the most important non-Indo-European language of ancient Italy. The linguistic structure of the language is just now beginning to be understood, thanks to efforts to make the corpus of texts available to the scholarly community in an easily accessible electronic format.
