LOOKING BACK

First days include major religious holidays

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Eid-al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, both fall during the first week of classes this year -- Rosh Hashanah Wednesday Sept. 8 - Friday Sept. 10, and Eid-al-Fitr falls on Sept. 10.

University policy ensures that no student will be penalized as a result of a religious observance, but it requires advance notification to course instructors by each observant student. In a recent memo, deputy provost John Cunningham noted that this becomes especially important this year, in that an instructor encountering a student on the roster who is not present at the first two meetings of a class could drop the named student from the class. He stressed that the policy is in no way meant to appear punitive, adding that more detailed information is available at the
religious affairs website.
