Xing addresses international symposium in Jerusalem

Baoshan Xing, professor of environmental and soil chemistry in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, gave an invited talk on May 23 at the International Symposium on Agriculture and Environmental Health at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
 
Xing spoke on “Environmental risk and toxicity of engineered nanoparticles.”
 
 
 
 

Friedmann cited for volunteer work at Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies

Arnold Friedmann, professor emeritus in Art, Architecture and Art History, received the Outstanding Community Leadership Award on May 30 as part of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s  “Unsung Heroes” awards dinner in Springfield.

Friedmann was recognized for his work as a volunteer with the Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies. The award included a monetary stipend for Friedmann and the institute.

Vann named state coordinator for BACCHUS Network

Health educator Amanda Collings Vann of the Center for Health Promotion has been appointed as a volunteer state coordinator for the BACCHUS Network, a nationally recognized leader in peer education development.
 
State coordinator is one of the highest levels of volunteer service achievable in the organization, which includes more than 330 peer education groups and over 8,000 students.

Outstanding staff and student employees recognized

Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy recognized 10 staff members and 10 student employees for outstanding contributions to the university at a reception held May 1 at the Marriott Center.

Environmental Health Sciences’ Calabrese to receive honorary degree

Edward Calabrese, professor of Environmental Health Sciences, will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) by McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. Calabrese will accept the degree on June 11 at the Spring Convocation for the School of Nursing and Medical Radiation Sciences Program.
 
Honorary degree recipients are recognized for their contributions in such areas as public service, education and scholarship, creative and performing arts, and for their work within the McMaster community. 
 
Calabrese learned of the honor in January via email. “It was quite a shock.

Climate scientist Raymond Bradley will receive honorary doctorate from Ontario’s Queen’s University

Climate scientist Raymond Bradley, director of the Climate System Research Center, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Queen’s University in ceremonies to be held June 12 in Kingston, Ontario.
 
Described as “a celebrated global warming whistleblower known for championing integrity in science,” Bradley joins actress Glenn Close as one of two honorary degree recipients from the United States. Also receiving honorary degrees are pioneering nurse Sally Elizabeth Thorne and Canadian Chief Justice Warren Winkler, among others.

Detective Lieutenant Ian Cyr named UMPD deputy chief of operations

Ian Cyr, detective lieutenant in the University of Massachusetts Amherst Police Department (UMPD), has been chosen to be the department’s deputy chief of operations, Chief John Horvath has announced.
 
“Lieutenant Cyr participated in an extensive search process that included numerous interviews with members of the campus community, as well as outside law enforcement professionals,” said Horvath. “He possesses a unique combination of education, training, and experience that will afford him the opportunity to succeed as the department’s deputy chief of operations.

News Office wins Telly Award for iCons video

Elizabeth Wilda, video producer for the Office of News and Media Relations, has been awarded a 2013 Telly Award for her video “The iCons Experience at UMass Amherst.” 
 
She submitted the video to the Telly Award committee for review in April and was notified in mid-May that her work had received a Bronze Award in the Film/Video category of Non-Broadcast Education Production.
 
iCons, an 18-credit academic program directed by chemistry professor Scott Auerbach and offered by the College of Natural Sciences, provides integrative science education in renewable energy and biomedicine.

Obituary: Paul Procopio, professor emeritus of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning

Paul Procopio, 94, alumnus and professor emeritus of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, died May 12 in Southbridge.

Born in Brockton, he graduated from the University in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture. During World War II, he was a civilian camouflage designer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
 
He was hired as an instructor of Horticulture in 1947. He earned his master’s degree in Horticulture in 1954.
 
In 1977, he served as acting head of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning.
 
He retired in 1983 as professor A and associate head of the

Thelwell represents UMass at Nigerian rites for Chinua Achebe

Professor emeritus Ekwueme Michael Thelwell of Afro-American Studies represented his department and the university at funeral rites in Nigeria for writer and former visiting professor Chinua Achebe, who died March 21 in Boston.
 
Thelwell delivered a keynote address at the internal day of tribute on May 20 at the International Conference Center in Abuja, the West African nation’s capital.
 
Thelwell also traveled to eastern Nigeria traditional ceremonies of celebration and burial by Achebe’s family and kinsmen.
