UMPD's K9 Diezel featured in police dog calendar
The UMass Amherst Police Department’s own K9 Diezel is featured on a 2013 color calendar from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to provide bullet and stab protective vests for police dogs.K9 Diezel appears on the cover of the calendar and is also the featured dog for July. The photo of the dog clad in a vest and protective footwear was taken by Diezel’s handler, UMPD officer Liana Varosky.
The calendar is now on sale for $15 online and at select retailers. Proceeds from the sales will provide bullet and stab protective vests for police dogs that are currently working without the potentially life-saving equipment. There are more than 20 law enforcement dogs waiting for protective vests, which cost $1,006 each.
“We’re really excited to offer this calendar, as it shows a great variety: different law enforcement departments, police dog breeds andgeneral activities of K9 teams. For example, we have German shepherd dogs, Labrador retrievers, Belgian Malinois and two bloodhounds in the calendar,” said Sandy Marcal, president of the East Taunton-based Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
The calendars are available locally at Dave’s Soda and Pet Food City in Agawam, Hadley, Northampton, Springfield and Ware. They may also be ordered at
