New course proposals
The following new course proposals have been submitted to the Faculty Senate Office for review and approval and are listed here for faculty review and comment. Comments on any new course proposal should be submitted to Ernest May, secretary of the Faculty Senate, at senate@senate.umass.edu.
ENGLISH 268, “American Literature and Culture Before 1865” 3 credits; Instructor: Hoang Phan or Mason Lowance; This course explores the American literature and culture before 1865. Prerequisites: None
ENGLISH 269, “American Literature and Culture After 1865” 3 credits; Instructor: Laura Furlan or Ruth Jennison or Deborah Carlin; This course explores the American literature and culture after 1865. Prerequisites: None
ENGLISH 386, “ Studies in Writing and Culture” 3 credits; Instructor: Donna LeCourt; A special topics course in composition and rhetoric studies that takes up questions of the relationship between writing production and various aspects of culture (e.g., identity, geography, economy, etc.). Prerequisites: ENGLWRIT 112; ENGLISH 200
AFROAM 650, “Writers of the Black Chicago Renaissance” 4 credits; Instructor: Steve Tracy; This course will treat major writers of the Black Chicago Renaissance of the 1930s-1950s, setting them in the context of the White Chicago Renaissance, the New Negro Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s, and other arts in Chicago in the era, and treating various aesthetics, goals, themes, symbols and images that express the zeitgeist of the movement. Prerequisites: None
