New course proposals

 The following new course proposals have been submitted to the Faculty Senate Office for review and approval and are listed here for faculty review and comment. Comments on any new course proposal should be submitted to Ernest May, secretary of the Faculty Senate, at senate@senate.umass.edu.

ANTHRO 588, “Field and Laboratory Methods in Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology,” 6 credits; Instructor: Dr. Ventura Pérez; Introduces students to major questions in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology including what constitutes data, how excavations and fieldwork are conducted and how field data are analyzed in the laboratory. Prerequisites: Enrollment through application to instructor

HISTORY 626, “Comparative Memory,” 3 credits; Instructor: Dr. John Berndt Olsen; Discussion of the problem of national memory cultures through a comparative study of how various nations have attempted to come to terms with the memories of the Second World War. Open to doctoral and masters students in History.

HISTORY 664, “Digital History,” 3 credits; Instructor: Dr. Jon Berndt Olsen; Examines theoretical and practical impacts of new media and technology on history, including examining the influence of digital history on how we research, write, present and teach history. Open to doctoral and masters history students only.

HISTORY 665, “Writing History for Popular Audiences,” 4 credits; Instructor: Dr. Marla Miller; Overview of tools for writing history for popular audiences and types of writing for audiences beyond the academy. Focus on student development as successful writers and readers of colleagues’ work.
