New course proposals
The following new course proposals have been submitted to the Faculty Senate Office for review and approval and are listed here for faculty review and comment. Comments on any new course proposal should be submitted to Ernest May, Secretary of the Faculty Senate, at senate@senate.umass.edu.
POLISCI 394PI “Power.2” 4 credits; Instructor: Barbara Cruikshank; this course is designed for Political Science and STPEC majors with a background in scholarship on the concept of power, in the theories, research and analysis of power. An original research prospectus and integrative experience are the core requirements. Prerequisites: A new course, “Power.1” taught at the 200–level
POLISCI 394LI “The Language of Politics” 4 credits; Instructor: Frederic Schaffer; This integrative experience course explores how language shapes politics, and provides an occasion for students to reflect on the foundational understandings of politics that they have developed in their major. Prerequisites: None
POLISCI 394TI/POLISCI 648 “Technology, Power, Governance” 4 credits; Instructor: Jane Fountain; Examines power and uses of digital technologies in national, transnational and global governance. Topics include inequalities, transparency, civil society, state capacity, privacy, social movements, cyberwar and electoral politics. Prerequisites: None
