Male adolescent participants needed for Kinesiology study
Researchers in the Kinesiology Department are seeking male adolescents to participate in a study to help assess sedentary behavior. For completing the study, participants will earn $100.
The goal of the project is to validate a newly developed survey that will measure where, why and how much people sit each day. The study consists of five study visits over a four-month period, which includes three months of no study activity. Eligible participants must be: males between the ages of 12 and 17, able to walk without major joint or muscle problems, healthy and free of chronic illness, fluent in English and available by phone during the study period. The timeline of the study is as follows:
Phase 1
Visit #1 (Day 1): approximately one hour
- Answer basic survey questions about job, education, exercise and sitting
- Measurements of blood pressure, height, weight, hip and waist circumference are taken
- Receive activity monitors to wear for the next seven days
- Over the next seven days, receive three 20-minute phone interviews asking about activity the day before
Visit #2 (Day 8): 45 minutes to one hour
- Return activity monitors
- Measurements of weight and blood pressure are taken
- Complete a survey
Visit #3 (Day 10): 30 minutes
- Complete one survey
*****Phase 2 = Three months of no study activity- participants will not hear from the researchers during this time******
Phase 3
Visit #4 (Day 1): One hour
- Complete surveys
- Measurements of height, weight, blood pressure, hip and waist circumferences are taken
- Receive activity monitors to wear for the next 7 days (as in Phase 1, Visit #1)
- Over the next seven days, receive three phone calls that will take about 20-30 minutes (as in Phase 1)
Visit #5 (day 8): 30 minutes
- Return the activity monitors
- Measurements of weight and blood pressure are taken
- Complete surveys
Prospective participants should e-mail umass.sit@gmail.com with a phone number and a convenient time for the researchers to conduct a quick phone screening. The lab can also be reached at 545-1583.
