Downey joins Emergency Management staff

Thomas S. Downey Jr. has been named emergency management and business continuity coordinator at Environmental Health and Safety.

Downey most recently worked as a disaster recovery/business continuity manager for Plymouth Rock Assurance in Boston. From 2007-11, he was assistant vice president for global continuity services for State Street Corporations in Quincy. He also held several positions at Fidelity Investments, including contingency risk operations manager.

“The hiring of Tom Downey as emergency management and business continuity coordinator clearly demonstrates the continuing commitment of the campus to having in place a comprehensive emergency management, business continuity and disaster recovery program,” said Don Robinson, director of Environmental Health and Safety.

Downey will concentrate on the implementation of continuity of operations and disaster recovery plans for the entire campus community and also serve as backup for Tom O’Regan, the campus’s emergency management and business continuity manager, Robinson said. “ We certainly are most fortunate to have in place two professionals that are dedicated to making sure that UMass is properly positioned to handle any foreseeable emergency in an effective manner with safety of the campus community as the paramount goal.”

Downey is based in Draper Hall and reports to O’Regan.
