Annual Metawampe hike and dinner set for Oct. 14

The 105th annual Metawampe hike on Mount Toby and post-hike dinner at the Sunderland Congregational Church are planned for Sunday, Oct. 14.

The hike steps off at noon from the east side of Mount Toby just off Route 63. The Metawampe hike is a 5.6-mile, moderately paced, but leisurely, three-hour trek with several stops along the way, including the Metawampe cabin. Hikers should arrive at the church parking lot at the corners of routes 47 and 116 no later than 11:45 a.m. The group will ride to the trailhead for the noon start.

At 5 p.m., the now-famous “all you can eat” homemade chicken potpie dinner will be served. The dinner also includes squash, green beans, rolls, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, apple pie and ice cream dessert, and juice and coffee.

The hike is free; tickets to the dinner are $11 each; $4 for children 3-12; under 3 free, the same price as the past three years ago. Dinner tickets must be purchased by Monday, Oct. 8 for headcount purposes.

Any (even loosely) UMass affiliated persons and guests are cordially invited to the hike or dinner or both. Details about the hike route, dress and parking will be sent to participants before the hike.
